In the vibrant halls of Waccamaw High School, there's a name that echoes with respect and affection: Sandra Smalls. Known affectionately as Auntie Sandra by the students, Smalls has been awarded the prestigious title of Support Staff of the Year, a recognition that barely scratches the surface of her contributions to the school and the wider Georgetown County School District.

Sandra's journey with the district spans an impressive 28 years. Sandra's journey with GCSD began at Waccamaw Elementary School, where she served as a cafeteria worker. She left the district for four years to embark on a career with Blue Cross Blue Shield. However, the call to work with kids was too strong to ignore, and in 1999, she made a return to the district as front office staff at Waccamaw High School. Over the years, she has seamlessly transitioned between roles - from media center clerk to guidance clerk, not to mention her ongoing commitment as a bus driver since 1999. Sandra has been an integral part of the WHS family, showcasing her versatility and commitment to the school's community.

But Sandra's impact goes beyond her official duties. She has become an unofficial mentor for many at-risk kids, offering a listening ear, guidance, and, most importantly, a steady presence in their lives. Her involvement in co-sponsoring clubs like Teens Against Drugs and the Gospel Choir, covering for absent teachers, chaperoning students, and managing behavior reporting in PowerSchool, showcases her versatility and dedication.

Her commitment extends beyond the school premises. Sandra is also an active member of the Greater Gordon Chapel AME Church, where she leads the Young People Division, contributes to the Missionary Praise team, coordinates audio/visual needs, and volunteers at the food bank, among other roles. This year, she welcomed a new addition to her family, her granddaughter Arayah, adding to her busy but fulfilling life.

Sandra is most proud of her personal growth, especially in learning technology skills, which has propelled her to pursue further education at Horry Georgetown Tech in networking and communications management. With dreams of eventually owning her own business in programming and networking, she is a beacon of lifelong learning and ambition.

Her philosophy is simple yet profound: "I just feel for kids. I just have a love for Kids. That's why I've been in the school district for so long." This love is reciprocated by the students and staff at Waccamaw High School, who feel Sandra's warmth and dedication daily.

Sandra Smalls is not just the Support Staff of the Year; she is a shining example of the profound impact one individual can have on a community. Her story is a reminder of the power of dedication, love, and the willingness to serve wherever needed. Waccamaw High School, and indeed the entire Georgetown County School District, is richer for her presence.
