Congratulations to WHS Teacher of the Year 24-25: Lawrie Kueneman Brone!
Brone is currently in her 9th year at WHS-- teaching AP Calculus AB, Precalculus, and Calculus and sponsoring the Yoga Club.
She was born and raised in Cardiff by the Sea, CA (a small beach town north of San Diego); "I grew up very poor so I knew that an education would pave a path for a better future."
After changing majors a few times, Brone graduated from San Diego State University with a degree in Mathematics.
She taught for 10 years in the California school district she had attended as a child, "where my former teachers became my mentors and friends." In 2003, Brone was nominated California League of Middle Schools Educator of the Year, and was written into the congressional record.
In the summer of 2004, Brone moved to Mt. Pleasant, SC where she and her family " fell in love with the beauty of the trees/marshes and the kind people."
10 years later, after her daughter graduated from Wando High School, she moved to Georgetown County.
This school year has been a memorable one. In November WHS teacher, Julie Humowitz, officiated Brone's wedding ceremony to Dan (hence the name change mid-year). And less than four months later -- Teacher of the Year honors.
We've got great teachers at Waccamaw High School, but you would be hard pressed to find anyone more deserving of the title.
