FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - September 20, 2024
Georgetown, SC – The Georgetown County School District Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that Dr. Bethany A. Giles has been appointed as the district's new superintendent, following a unanimous vote during a special board meeting held on Friday, September 20.
Dr. Giles shared, “I am grateful to our Board for their leadership, support, and vote of confidence. I believe this opportunity is a reflection of uncommon favor. It is a reminder to me of the immense responsibility that comes with leading this amazing district - the one that has been home and continues to be home. I accept the responsibility to serve, uplift, and lead boldly - our home, our school, our community. But this is not just about me. It is about us working together in harmony to do what is right for our most precious commodity, our children. Together, we will lead our district forward.”
Board Chair William Gaskins expressed his enthusiasm about Dr. Giles' appointment, stating, “We are excited to welcome Dr. Bethany Giles as the new superintendent of Georgetown County School District. Through a comprehensive and thoughtful search process, it became clear that her expertise, vision, and dedication to our students and community make her the ideal choice. We are confident that her leadership will guide the district toward continued success and innovation.”
The decision comes after an extensive search facilitated by the South Carolina School Boards Association (SCSBA). The search process was designed to ensure transparency and community involvement, including multiple input sessions with district employees, parents, and local stakeholders. In addition, a "Meet & Greet" event provided the community with the opportunity to engage directly with the finalists for the position. The final stages included in-depth interviews with the Board of Trustees, resulting in Dr. Giles’ selection as the district's next leader.
Dr. Giles brings a wealth of experience to the role of superintendent, having served in various leadership capacities throughout her career. Giles is currently serving as the Interim Superintendent in Georgetown County School District. Prior to this she served as Deputy Superintendent of Academics and Student Services for three years. She was Executive Director of Secondary Schools and Athletics for two years, Principal at Carvers Bay High School for two years, Principal at Brown’s Ferry Elementary School for nine years, Assistant Principal at Rosemary Middle School for two years, and a teacher at Rosemary Middle School for five years.
