GCSD Students Making GAins on SCREADY Assessment

For Immediate Release (August 16, 2024)

“The 2023-24 SCREADY results reflect the dedication of our schools and teachers in meeting the needs of our students. GCSD has made significant strides in state testing, with a notable increase in the percentage of students meeting or exceeding expectations in both SCReady ELA and Math,” shared Interim Superintendent Dr. Bethany A. Giles. “These results indicate a positive trend in student performance, particularly with more students reaching and surpassing the expected proficiency levels.”

For the 2023-24 school year, approximately 47.5% of GCSD third through eighth-grade students met or exceeded expectations on the ELA portion of SCREADY, marking a 2.25% increase from the previous school year. In Math, approximately 37.02% of students met or exceeded expectations, reflecting an increase of approximately 4.52% from the previous year.

“GCSD’s Spring 2024 SCReady ELA scores show significant improvement, highlighting recovery from the impact of COVID-19,” shared Dr. Cutina Barrineau, Director of Accountability, Assessment, Evaluation, and Research. “This year's results feature the lowest number of students who Did Not Meet expectations and the highest number of students who Met or Exceeded expectations, indicating that efforts to address pandemic-related learning loss are proving effective.”

At the elementary level, five schools and the district as a whole improved their scores compared to 2023. Additionally, six schools and the district overall surpassed their performance over the past four years, including the pre-pandemic year of 2019. This demonstrates a consistent upward trend in student achievement across multiple years.

At the middle school level, four out of five middle schools and the district overall exceeded their performance from the past four years, including the pre-pandemic year of 2019. One school narrowly missed this trend, falling short by just 1% compared to 2023.

“GCSD's Math SCReady scores have shown improvements over the past three years, but there is still work to be done in reducing the number of students in the Did Not Meet and Approaching categories,” stated Barrineau. “However, it is worth noting that the number of students in the Exceeded category is the highest it has been, even surpassing the pre-pandemic levels, having 17.48%  in 2024 compared to 15.36% in 2019.”

At the elementary level, 40% of schools and the district overall exceeded their performance from the past four years, including the pre-pandemic year of 2019. Additionally, 60% of schools surpassed their 2023 scores, indicating continued improvement in student achievement.

Four out of five middle schools and the district overall exceeded their performance from the past three years, with two out of five schools surpassing their results from the past four years, including the pre-pandemic year of 2019. Additionally, four out of five schools and the district overall also exceeded their scores from 2023.

"GCSD's Spring 2024 SCREADY results showcase remarkable progress in student achievement, highlighting increases in ELA and Math proficiency. This positive trend post-pandemic demonstrates the effectiveness of #TeamGCSD's collaborative efforts to
