SCDE Response to Waiver Request for Reopening Schools Plan

On August 10, Georgetown County School District announced our opening phase for Week 1 beginning September 8, 2020 will be REMOTE PHASE.  The announced operating phase for Week 1 will be REMOTE PHASE.  Immediately following the announcement, GCSD submitted a request to the South Carolina Department of Education that we not be required to transition to our HYBRID PHASE by September 14 if our DHEC risk rating had not improved from HIGH RISK to MEDIUM RISK.

On August 12, we received a response from the SCDE and the contingency on our approved plan has been changed.  The new contingency on our plan now reads:

Your school reopening plan was previously approved with the caveat that you begin to offer a face to face instruction option by September 14, 2020.  In light of school district start dates varying across the state we have changed this to require that the district and the SCDE (SC Department of Education) jointly evaluate an in person offering every two weeks after your school start date. This will allow those who begin after Labor Day additional time to plan for face to face instruction.

As a result, in cooperation with the SCDE, GCSD will plan to update our operating phase on a bi-weekly basis with a 2-week outlook so that families and schools will have time to adjust to a HYBRID PHASE change as soon as it is safe to do so.  We will continue to adjust our operating phase based on the latest DHEC reports for risk of disease spread in our county.
