Monitoring Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19)

March 13 Update: Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19)
Posted on 03/13/2020

Dear Parents, Students, Faculty and Staff;

Georgetown County School District has remained in daily contact with federal and state health officials regarding the spread of the Novel (new) Coronavirus (COVID-19) in South Carolina, which has generated concerns and questions from parents, staff and community members about steps taken to minimize the risks of spreading the illness in schools.

The Department of Health and Environmental Control has recommended that based on current data, there is no reason to close schools at this time. This is a fluid situation and GCSD is constantly monitoring changes. All stakeholders should continue to check the GCSD website and Facebook page for any updates.

CDC recommendations for school closure.

Georgetown County School District continues to monitor the situation is following the guidance provided by DHEC, the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Gov. Henry McMaster’s office, the State Superintendent’s office, and our own medical advisors.

GCSD has taken the following precautionary steps at this time:

Promoting student handwashing and teaching respiratory etiquette including avoiding frequent touching of the eyes, nose and mouth.

Enhancing environmental cleaning using products proven effective in killing Coronavirus.

Bringing in additional custodial staff to increase frequency and depth of cleaning.

Monitoring absenteeism and notifying local health officials about large increases in student and staff absences.

Reminding parents to keep students at home who have symptoms of a respiratory illness.

Monitoring field trip and athletic event destinations to insure students are not traveling through or to cities experiencing an outbreak (as defined by the CDC).

Developing distance learning (e-learning) plans for schools that may be closed in response to a local outbreak.

Should a case of Coronavirus be confirmed by DHEC among our students or staff, GCSD will immediately notify all parents and provide recommendations and next steps. GCSD will make every effort to continue to provide educational services in an age-appropriate manner.
