January 5 Update from Superintendent Price

January 5 COVID-19 Update from Superintendent Price
Posted on 01/05/2022

Georgetown County School District Staff, Students, and Families:

As you are aware, the Omicron variant of the coronavirus continues to spread throughout our nation and state. Georgetown County School District (GCSD) is continuing to monitor the impact of COVID-19 on our community and utilize measures to ensure a safe learning environment for all students and employees.

GCSD continues to follow guidance provided by the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC) and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In an effort to keep you informed, we wanted to let you know that on January 4, 2022, SCDHEC released updated guidance for K-12 schools (https://scdhec.gov/covid19#top-guidance).  These updates are in addition to those shared with you on Monday, January 3, 2022.

Included in the guidance is new terminology - “maximally vaccinated.” “Maximally vaccinated” replaces the term “fully vaccinated” and refers to an individual who has completed their primary vaccination series and has had a booster shot, if eligible. Updates were also made to household close contact guidelines.

At this time, booster shots are available to individuals 16 years and older, 5 months after completion of their primary vaccination series.  In order for a 16+ year old student to be considered “maximally vaccinated,” they must have received their booster shot if they are eligible.

Students under the age of 16 are considered “maximally vaccinated” if they have completed their primary vaccination series.  The CDC is currently reviewing booster shot eligibility for 12-15 year olds. This may be updated in the coming days.  We will continue to make you aware as we receive new guidance.

All COVID-19 documents on the GCSD website, including the COVID-19 FAQ and Student Quarantine Scenarios, have been updated to reflect new CDC and SCDHEC guidance. Any changes are effective as of January 5, 2022.

I appreciate your attention to this matter in these ever-changing times and to the continuously updated changes in guidance and terminology.  While the pandemic continues to present many challenges, I remain hopeful that we will get through this together one step and one day at a time.

Thank You,

Keith Price
