At the June 1 Georgetown County School District Board Meeting, Dr. Bethany Giles was named the new Assistant Superintendent for Academics and Student Services.

Giles, currently the Executive Director of Secondary Schools and Athletics, will assume her new duties on July 1, 2021. She follows Jon Tester who is retiring after 32 years of service in the district.

Giles is a native of Georgetown County and grew up attending GCSD schools. A standout student and athlete at Andrews High, she attended South Carolina State University, where she earned All-Conference honors in softball. Later she earned her Masters of Education degree from The Citadel and her Educational Doctorate from South Carolina State.

She returned to GCSD in 2001 as a teacher at Rosemary Middle. From there she was an assistant principal at Rosemary Middle and principal at Brown’s Ferry Elementary and Carvers Bay High before assuming her current position as Executive Director of Secondary Schools and Athletics.

First, I want to thank our School Board and Superintendent Price for the vote of confidence at last night’s board meeting,” said Giles. “I am humbled and most appreciative of the opportunity to serve in this role. Matriculating through the GCSD schools, I was blessed to have family and former educators who poured into me. As a result, I always wanted to give back what was bestowed upon me and strive to positively impact our communities. Under the leadership of Superintendent Price, it is my belief that we will continue to advance the mission of GCSD and profoundly impact our youth and communities.”

Giles was also a successful girls’ basketball coach for Andrews High School. In seven seasons as the team’s coach the Yellow Jackets won two Lower State titles and advanced to the state finals.

GCSD Superintendent Keith Price said, “Throughout this school year, I have enjoyed working alongside and learning with Dr. Giles. She is an instructional leader who is driven to build the instructional capacity within all educators.  She has the best interest of all GCSD students and employees in mind in all she does.  She is a team-player who recognizes the importance of meaningful collaboration for forward-planning.  I am excited about the momentum we are building in GCSD and I look forward to many future successes working together with Dr. Giles in this expanded role.”
