January 3 COVID-19 Update from Superintendent Price
Posted on 01/03/2022

Georgetown County School District Staff, Students, and Families:

I hope this email finds you and your family safe and well.  As you are aware, we are experiencing a surge of new COVID-19 cases in our area due to the highly contagious Omicron variant. We remain confident in our ability to keep our school community safe by following CDC and SCDHEC guidelines and will continue to promote safety on all campuses.  It is imperative that parents and employees report COVID-19 positive diagnoses or symptomatic exposures to your school. In order for the district to make informed decisions, we need to be aware of those not feeling well.

As students return to school on Tuesday, January 4, 2022, I wanted to provide you with updates about GCSD’s COVID-19 protocols.

Reduced Isolation Period for those who test Positive for COVID-19:

In accordance with policy changes by the CDC and SCDHEC, students and employees testing positive for COVID-19 will now need to isolate for at least 5 days following the positive test, regardless of vaccination status.  Students/Employees can return to school after 5 days of isolation IF they are asymptomatic AND without fever for at least 24 hours (and have not used fever-reducing medication during that time). Per DHEC guidelines, upon returning to school, a mask must be worn through Day 10.

Documentation for Return after testing Positive for COVID-19:

For students returning after 5 days of isolation following a positive test, a parent note must be submitted (sample Return Documentation).  The note should include the student’s name, date tested, acknowledge that the student is symptom free including no fever for 24 hours, and acknowledge that the student must wear a mask through Day 10.

Exclusion Period for Close Contacts (Quarantine):

  • Quarantine can end after Day 10 without testing and if no symptoms were reported during daily at home monitoring.

  • Quarantine can end after Day 5 if a viral test is negative AND no symptoms were reported during daily at home monitoring.  The viral test must be collected no sooner than Day 4, and quarantine cannot be discontinued earlier than completion of Day 5.  In addition, a mask must be worn through Day 10.

  • Close contacts do not have to quarantine if:

    • They have completed all eligible vaccinations and booster doses, OR

    • They have been verified by positive PCR or antigen test (not antibody test) to have been infected with COVID-19 in the previous 90 days.

    • Pursuant to DHEC guidelines, a mask must be worn for 10 days

I encourage you to continue to practice good hygiene and social distancing. Vaccination and masking continue to be the best ways to stay safe and avoid quarantine. Working together as a community, we can stop the spread of COVID-19 and ensure a safe and healthy learning environment for our students and staff.
